Hey, fellow book addicts!

Yes, yes. I know. Author's note. Yay.

Bear with me here. I'll be quick. Pls read. Or scan through.

I love readers, and I do want more readers than I have (which is zero rn). If you want to come to me with a selfless heart and tips on how to get my book more readers and love, please post them on my message board.

^ Rn I am staying right here on wattpad with this book bc i want to focus on other genres.

This book will not have cussing, and if it does, it won't be major. It'll be minor in word choice and in amount.

This book will not have smut.

Don't come at me for that^. I'm not comfortable writing it, and that's my personal opinion. You have been warned, so don't come at me like everybody else does to authors on here.

Please be respectful of mine and any other readers' opinions. Feel free to share opinions in the comments, but please do so in a mature manner.

This book is sort of cliche. Yeah, I know, but I'm coming from Fantasy, so I wanted a break to write all my other fantasies and book ideas out.

Will post a "Get to Know the Author" if prompted. Would be pretty fun for me, I think.

Also, I will be posting this author's note the day I officially graduate from high school, and then I leave for Italy a few days later, so updates will be on track when I return from Italy. If I have time and wifi, I will post in Italy.

Chapter 1: "The Party is Next Friday"
lock

"I confess I do not know why, but looking at the stars always makes me dream" (Van Gogh).

II

The bell rings loudly, piercing the silence of the hall and signaling the oncoming hoard of students about to pour into the hall. I exit my classroom, my arms crossed across my chest as I walk with my best friend, Amber Retton, to her car.

My current obsession song plays in my head. I wanna dedicate this jam... to all those things I left behind in girls' apartments and various domiciles over the years...

The halls are loud, but Amber is doing her best to yell over the cacophony about some party.

"The party, Nico," Amber shouts, her blonde head held high as people move out of her way. "It's next Friday. Are you even listening to me?"

"Amber," I try to shout back. "I can't hear you. Just wait until we get to the car. Gosh, who is screaming in here?"

Mondays have always been the bane of my existence, and I firmly believe all sane humans understand. Sane or insane, actually.

An academic or not, I have never thought of school as fun, and Mondays have always signaled the start to a week of slavery to the administration.

Junior year will make my academic life dominate my social life, or at least I expect it to. We're only three weeks in, and I am already overwhelmed with my school work. My one joy is English and my short elective history class this semester.

I fling open the door to Amber's car, a beautiful 2022 Ford Bronco Sport. When her parents bought it for her earlier this year, we had joked about the color being "Area 51" to the point that we now call the car "The Alien."

The Alien is neat, as always. If I had a car, my car would never be this clean. I like to think it would be, but I know myself. It wouldn't be. Amber already gets on me about the empty water bottles I leave in her front seat.

Amber shuts her door, starting the car. "Whew, I'm not sure I can do two more years of this. Babes, school is not fun. The only good part of school is volleyball."

I buckle my seat belt and pull my legs up into the seat. "I'm just tired. You said something about a party? Friday? Let me have aux."

Amber glances over at me, fumbling her phone over to me, before she turns her blue eyes back to the road. "Nico, next Friday. The party is next Friday. How have you not heard about it? It's buzzing everywhere at school except in the teachers' heads. Your brother better be there. I know that's where he's going to finally notice me. It's junior year for us, and he's a senior. This is it, girl."

I sigh silently, making a face at the poor phone so Amber doesn't see my pity stare. West is always in Amber's line of sight, but she is never in his.

Like myself, Amber reads too many romance novels. Unlike myself, she seems to see her books in real life. That glance from the cute boy in the mall? Strangers to lovers. They'll meet again next week. That smile from the ice cream shop worker? He always looked at her differently. He'll ask for her number the next time they go. The random guy who picked up the book she dropped (on purpose) in the library? He'll be there again next time she goes, and they'll hit it off.

I know I'm prone to delusions myself, but Amber seems to weave them into each hour of her life, mainly with my brother, West. It's always entertaining, but with West, it's kind of sad. She won't move on, and he won't notice her.

Frankly, I'm tired of seeing my best friend smile through her tears as West comes in talking about the new girl he just met or the date he just came back from.

"Amber..." I try. I decide to leave it and turn my song on, and she groans and I bounce to it.

Amber presses the gas a little harder, making the engine rev as it tries to keep up with Amber's new need for speed. "And, I know. With West. It'll happen one day. I just have to wait."

Amber turns again to me, giving me a small smile. "You're going, aren't you?"

I purse my lips. Amber shoots me a pleading look. "Nicolina, please. If you go, West will go. He'll want to watch over you. And I want my best friend there. I won't have fun if neither of you are there. Please?"

I don't have any options. I don't want to hurt my friend. "I'll go for a short while. Maybe an hour?"

Amber smiles, her eyes staying on the road. "Yes! Thank you, babes."

Amber finally pulls into my driveway, the short ride only a fraction of Amber's usual trip home. "This is you, Nic."

I wait a second. "Are you staying?"

Amber smiles slightly and nods. "Yeah. I'll stay for a minute. Might get to see your brother."

I hop out of the car, grabbing my backpack and lunchbox. Amber does the same, and we walk to the door. I fumble with my keys for a moment before I get the door open and go inside, shutting the door behind Amber.

As Amber goes to the bathroom and sets her stuff in my room, my mind wanders back to the party. I don't want to go. I don't want to see Hunter.

He had been avoiding me since our breakup over the summer, and I'd been avoiding him, too. I especially kept ignoring when he stopped ignoring me last week and started trying to talk to me again. The guy I used to love. The guy I thought I was going to marry. I was naïve.

Amber pops out of the bathroom, jogging over to where I'm standing by the couch. "Snack time?"

I laugh. "It's always snack time when you come over."

Amber smiles. She grabs my hand and pulls me into the kitchen. "Well, duh. You're the best baker I know. I want my free gourmet treats."

Amber types on her phone as I quickly cut some apples and celery, making two separate dishes with peanut butter in both and raisins in one. Amber thanks me quickly and grabs an apple slice, digging it into her peanut butter. It wasn't gourmet, but it was good.

"I'm just so excited for this party," Amber said, speaking after she finished her first apple slice. "I can't remember what the theme is right now, but we'll have to dress to impress. We can see what's in our closets and decide if a shopping spree is needed."

I nod, not very intrigued. Amber suits the popular, social butterfly lifestyle. I do not so much. Amber cares about parties and pop culture fashion. I care about writing and 70s fashion.

We are different, but we've always been best friends. Well, since I met her at the park a few years ago, right before I started high school.

The same tugging feeling in my gut pulls my mind to a place I can't remember. To a face that's too blurry to recognize. A hiraeth tucked too far away in the depths of my mind.

The door opens, hitting the wall. Amber and I wince, then laugh. West is home. He's the only one who can't open or close the door properly.

West enters the kitchen, humming to himself. He gives me a small hug and turns to Amber.

"Hey, Amby. Any new news?"

Amber smiles, scrunching up her nose. "Not that I recall, West. What about you?"

West shakes his head, feigning dejection. "None. My life is boring."

Amber's smile softens, and she looks at Nico as if to say "Look! This is my opening!"

"West, I— What about this Friday? Surely your life isn't boring enough to be free this Friday, like mine is."

West takes one of my celery sticks. He crunches on it, then glances at Amber. "Nah, I actually have plans Friday night. My friend from Rogers is setting me up with another girl from Rogers. They're in the same friend group. He told me she's into music and music production. She's sarcastic. I'm actually really excited about this one."

Amber's face falls as West gives me a peck on the cheek and leaves up the stairs to go to his room. I pat her back gently as she stares at the stairs. She picks up her bag, giving me a smile that doesn't reach her eyes. "Better luck next time, I guess. I'm going to go ahead and go to volleyball. See you tomorrow, babes."

I tell her bye, and wonder if I should say something to West. I wonder if he notices the way she looks at him. I wonder if he cares, or if his caring is telling her about the details of his love life to let her down gently.

I run up the stairs to my room, and I play through my records while I read. After a while, the smell of warm food pulls me downstairs. I go down and enter the kitchen, happy to find my brother making dinner. I shoot him a grin, and he rolls his eyes at me.

"You didn't help, you idiot."

My smile widens. "That was the point. You're the man."

"And you're the woman. What does it matter? Hey, Juliette isn't gonna be home tonight. Mom's going to be home soon, I think, but I'm gonna go ahead and fix her plate. Can you grab me a plate?"

I pull open the drawer, grabbing a yellow plate. West scrunches his nose up at my color choice, but he takes it and fills it with our dinner.

We make our own plates after Mom's plate goes into the microwave. We sit at the table to eat. A brief wondering of my earlier odd feeling pops up. A blurry face. It's a scene that's been stuck in my mind for years.

I finish my food, realizing that we've both been silent. I wonder what's on West's mind, but upon asking, he merely smiles and shakes his head.

II

I walk out of my bathroom, shutting off the light and walking to my closet for some pajamas. I root around for a moment, looking for a hoodie.

And then I see it. A dark blue football hoodie, the words to our school plastered on the front and his number on the back. It still smells like him.

I angrily grasp the hood and march to my bedroom door. I fling it open, seeing West's confused face from his room. I gesture to the hoodie. West sighs and gets up from his bed, walking over.

"I'll take it, Nico. Just go to bed. Mom's home. She's eating dinner now, and then she'll be up to tell us goodnight."

I nod, and step into him for a hug. He kisses my cheek. "I love you, West. Goodnight."

"Love you too, Nic."

I climb into my bed.

Hunter's hoodie. Still in my closet. Still in my freaking closet.

I want to get away from him. I want to erase him from my memory.

I feel the hot, angry tears prick my eyes. He doesn't have control over me anymore. He can't push me too far anymore. He can't make fun of me anymore. He's gone.

And I can't even say that I was the reason he is.

I'm half asleep when Mom comes into my room, kissing my forehead and telling me goodnight.

A blurry image shoots into my head again, a dark haired child with short hair and a wide smile.

Chapter 2: "It Isn't Just a Crush"
lock

"Collapse into me. Just once. I promise you'll never have to fall again" (Perry Poetry).

II

I jolt slightly when a foot kicks mine. I open my bleary eyes and glare over to the desk beside me. A girl is looking at me nervously. She discreetly points to the one of the two windows near the ceiling of the classroom.

A dark mop of hair flies up, and a set of dark brown eyes follow. Then they fall. It happens again. And again. And again.

I frown, my eyebrows turning down in utter confusion at my friend.

My hand raises, and the teacher makes a face at me. "Yes, Mr. Henford?"

"Can I have a bathroom pass?"

The teacher purses his lips at me. "It's 'may I', and why do you need it?"

A couple of bored chuckles pitted across the classroom.

I grit my teeth. "Because I have to piss."

The teacher blinks, then narrows his eyes again, trying to decide if I was being disrespectful. I sit back confidently in my seat, putting my "I have a lot of money, and I know it" façade on. The teacher pulls a pass from his drawer and holds it out. I mutter a quick "thanks" before I take it and leave.

Sure enough, my two idiotic best friend are loitering in the hallway, cracking up about how Jake looked jumping up and down trying to see into the window. Rikkard sees me first, and his slight smile falls into the serious but comfortable expression he reserves for me. The thought brings my mind to his situation, and I frown.

"Rike, you okay?"

Rikkard allows the corners of his mouth to shift upwards. "Yeah, man. That's not why we pulled you out of class. We got bored."

Jake grins at me, running a hand through his hair. "Man, that was fun. Did you see that girl beside you? She was staring at you so intensely that she could see your soul. Y'know? You should see if she'll come over."

I roll my eyes at him. "Jake. Seriously?"

Jake grins goofily and glances at Rikkard. "Figured you'd say that. Introduce me to her, and I'll make her stop wondering about you and start wondering about me. Maybe she'll make the party next week better, if you know what I mean."

Rikkard chuckles at that. "What did you expect from him? And I didn't think you'd want to tie yourself to a girl until you've seen them all at the party."

Jake tsks, tapping the posters hung on the walls as they meander around the halls. "Nah, I don't. But I can't let that opportunity go to waste. That party's gonna be epic, though. Did you hear they moved it? It's at, ah, Jessica's house now."

"The girl you were talking to last week?" I ask, knowing what his response will be as soon as the words leave my lips.

He follows through with my thoughts. "Yeah. Jessica A. But we didn't talk very much, if you know what I mean."

Rikkard hums at that. "I wonder if I'll venture out. It's our senior year."

I smirk, taking a short stab at him. "Done with Amber?"

Jake groans, his head dramatically dropping back. "Finally. After, what? Almost a year?"

Rikkard grumbles, "A year in December. After that party."

"How could we forget?" I laugh. "You came home drunk and professing your love for a rando."

Rikkard glares at him, a slight dip in his frown giving away his slight amusement. "She laughed with me the whole party. I had her full attention. She's athletic and smart and absolutely breathtaking. Of course I fell for her."

We walk for a moment longer, silence stretching out. I'm deep in thought about my own situation. Rikkard is deep in thought about his Amber situation. Jake is probably deep in thought about the girls he wants to get with next Friday.

Jake seems to remember a detail the moment I realize he might bring it up. He turns his mischievous grin to me, and I internally groan. We're going there. Fantastic.

"Valen, Rikkard isn't the only one with a huge crush."

I roll my eyes at him. "Jake, it isn't a crush. Crushes go away. This... whatever this is—It's been years, and I'll still see her and my heart flutters. I hear her short laugh and I can't pull air into my lungs. I see her perfect smile and her dimple and I just—It—sh—It isn't just a crush."

I look up from the tile floor I was staring at to see my two friends staring at me. I narrow my eyes. "What? Can I not—"

Jake interrupts me. "Didn't know you were, like... What's that author? Mozart?"

Rikkard and I look at Jake, trying to figure out what's wrong with his brain. It connects with Rikkard before it connects with me.

"Oh," Rikkard states. "Shakespeare."

Rikkard pauses for a minute before he looks back at Jake. "Dude. Have you never noticed? He always sound ridiculously smart and poetic when he talks about her. Probably because she is ridiculously smart or something."

I try to decipher if there was an insult in what Rikkard said, but nothing is registering.

"Hey," Jake cuts into his thoughts. "Is she going next Friday night?"

"I doubt it," I respond. We continue walking, briefly having to duck into the bathroom to hide from a roaming teacher.

"You know," Jake starts once we leave the protection of the bathroom. "We could set you up. Help you get over her."

I shake my head vehemently. "No."

Jake groans dramatically, flinging his arms out beside him. "Oh, come on, Henford. All the girls fall all over you. If you just entertained a few girls a month, you'd feel better and we'd get a chance with their friends. It's a win-win. It's been years, and your idiotic crush is staying the same. Admit defeat and go get laid. You need it."

Rikkard raises his eyebrows at Jake, then glances at Valen. "Jake, dude. We get that you don't want to tie down, but let Valen do whatever he wants. It's not harming you at all."

"Yeah, well, it is," Jake continues. "The girls like how Valen looks, and they like how rich he is. He could be using that to his advantage. He could be with a girl every night. I mean, come on. It's bad that I have to tell girls that you've already picked a girl for the night for they'll leave you alone. Dude, you're seventeen. Get with a girl."

Jake, my friend, I want to say. I am a stubborn bastard.

I stop when I hear the bell ring. Students pour from the classrooms, chattering loudly in the hall. "Jake, you don't have to tell people I'm sleeping with somebody. I don't care what other people think."

We duck into an empty classroom, letting our conversation find peace from the rumble of chatter in the halls.

Rikkard sits on top of a desk, glancing between me and Jake. Jake glares at me, letting his own selfish thoughts overrule the importance of my own.

"I care what people think," Jake states bluntly. "Before I said anything, people thought you didn't like girls. Or anyone. I fixed those rumors. I had to fix them, because girls stopped coming up to us at parties and stuff. I had almost a month of nothing from anyone at our school. I had to go with my friends from Central to ball games and parties so I could find girls that didn't think we were all asexual. The things I said turned you back into the cool, rich dude who everybody wants but is super picky about his women. I fixed it, man."

I let him have the last word. It isn't worth it to argue. Jake is strong-willed. He does what he wants. He thinks what he wants. It's like arguing with a brick wall.

I glance at Rikkard in response to Jake's speech, but I find him glaring at Jake.

"Alright," Jake says. "Whatever. You're welcome. What time is lunch?"

II

The bell rings for lunch, finally ending Jake's complaints about Amber's group not having another girl for him to go after and his digs about his two friends' crushes.

Not a crush for me, though, as much as Jake thinks it is. I won't get over it. I can't. My heart won't let me.

We walk through the excited throng of hungry students and towards our usual table.

I can't help but be drawn back to my thoughts of this girl. Years. It's been years of unrequited feelings. I haven't spoken to her a lot. I haven't made an effort to seek her out. I've let her be.

Thoughts of my parents invade my mind. My parents love me, yes, but they're always gone. They're always working on their case. They don't love me enough to stay. The two things that have always kept me away from announcing my feelings are my fear of rejection and the fear that she won't stay close with me. I don't want to be loved from afar, because that's how it feels with my parents.

I realize that that's what I'm doing with her. But she doesn't know that. It's different.

We sit down at the table, and a final decision made by my desperate heart hits me.

It's my senior year. This is it. I can't let it all go away. I can't be plagued by the thought of her for the rest of my life. I won't live in regret.

This is my last chance.

II

Half our circle table is empty, per usual. My eyes survey the lunchroom, looking for a certain pair of green eyes. Instead, my eyes connect with a pair of brown ones. I sigh as she smiles lazily at me. When she stands up and motions for her friend to follow, I curse.

Rikkard and Jake's eyes snap to me, then to the two girls approaching us. I see Jake's demeanor change, switching to a lazy confidence. Rikkard's amused gaze moves to me, his eyes slightly mocking.

"Hey, Valen," Bianca's voice sounds from behind me. My eyes bleed desperation as I stare back at Rikkard, begging him to help me get out of this.

I turn to face the two girls. "Hey, Bianca. Hey, Theza."

I see another girl from their table approaching. "Hey, Lyrica."

Bianca turns to look at Lyrica. Lyrica shrugs and settles over near Jake. Her dark arm drapes over his shoulder, contrasting with his pale complexion. She leans down.

"Valen," Bianca snaps. She sighs. "Hey, have you heard about the party?"

"Yeah," I respond.

"Well, are you going with anyone? Do you already have someone in mind for when you go home?"

I close my eyes for a moment. Bianca seems to think we were destined to be together this year. In two years, she has never gone after anyone but me and another guy who graduated last year. After John left, her affection moved to me. Now, Bianca finds ways to be near me. It's annoying.

And this year, I'm going to make an effort with Nico. I can't have her messing that up.

"I don't want to go with you, Bianca. I..."

I look at Jake. He leans away from Lyrica and stares at Bianca. "Hey, Bee, he's already promised that night to a girl from Bob Jones."

I hate it. But it works.

Bianca's expression sours. "Wow, okay. Thanks, Valen."

She leaves, marching back her table. Lyrica follows, waving back at Jake with two fingers. He watches her leave with lustful eyes. Theza watches her friends leave, and she smiles at Rikkard. "Bye, Rike."

I look at Rikkard. He shakes his head, indicating that Theza, with her umber skin, hazel and curly hair, and dark blue eyes, could not distract him from Amber. I nod.

"Bianca and her friends are the neediest, most desperate, sluttiest girls in this school. Maybe even in the county."

Rikkard and I break eye contact, our heads snapping over to meet Jake's laid back and amused expression.

Did that really come out of his mouth?

"Hot versus beautiful. Valen, I don't see the difference, man."

Rikkard kicks my leg, and I shift my glare to him. He gives me a pointed look, but I shift my glare back to Jake. Jake has half a chip hanging out of his mouth, his eyes wide.

"What?" he demands. "I really can't see the difference."

I have no clue what I would do next, but I hear it. Her laugh. It ripples across the loud lunchroom and to me, its final target.

I shift around in my seat, gazing at her. Her dark, curly hair bounces as she walks enthusiastically with her brother. Her piercing green eyes shine as she laughs again, swinging her black lunchbox in her hand.

Nico Vaughan, the glorious, orphic swirl of color in this life.

Chpt 2 ✔️
Word of the Week: Orphic (mysterious and entrancing)

yeah, i know the end line was cheesy. oh well 🤷🏻‍♀️

‼️ REMINDER: the quotes don't have anythin' to do w/ the chpt

currently reading some books that make me want to fall back on my comfort books where nothing bad happens.

I'm needing me some Storm and Silence. Or The Black Diaries. The humor is amazing, and the plot is interesting, but low-key comforting.

Vote, comment, and share!

Much love and prayers!

Her favorite song came on and she started dancing. And Josh was at his window.
